Norman parked the faded silver El Camino in his usual spot in front of Piňata World. Everyone knew not to park there when Zauberspiele was open. Well, all the magicals knew. It unofficially belonged to Norman. He got out of the car, the door protesting loudly as he swung it shut with a hard shove. Norman was not one to discard anything easily.

He made his way toward the front door, a hot wind whipping around his ankles, tossing a leaflet for the Vegan Nom food truck skidding across the top of his shoe. He gave a short grunt and kept trudging toward his destination. Lightning spread out across the sky for a moment just over the store, gone as quickly as it came. “Hmph,” snorted Norman. “Texas appetizer.” He kept moving, thinking about his strategy for the next round of Betrayal Legacy.

But a prickly sense across the back of his neck made him slow down, his moustache twitching. He sniffed the air, confused at the absence of a particular smell.

“Norman!” He turned toward the shout and saw the source of the trouble he was feeling. A fellow Zauberspiele gamer was lumbering toward him with some difficulty, his left toe dragging ever so slightly against the pavement. His face was twisted in anguish. Norman narrowed his eyes, scanning the situation, but he said nothing, patiently waiting for more information.

“Norman!” Phil Henderson was still shouting despite getting closer and closer. He was an old friend from way back and an occasional drinking buddy. Norman’s moustache twitched again. Something was very different this early evening. Something bad.

Phil got close enough to put out his hands and lean them on Norman’s shoulder. Usually a risky move but this time Norman didn’t stop him. “It’s gone!” wailed Phil, his belly shaking with grief. “It’s gone! All of it! He took it!”

Norman’s countenance smoothed out as awareness sank in to his bones. That was the missing scent. No magic. “When?” he said in his low, customary drawl.

“In the alley behind the store!” he moaned, pointing toward Piňata World. “He was waiting for me.” Phil’s entire body shook with the effort from releasing the sadness. His hands still rested on Norman’s shoulders but the middle of his body sagged behind him, making a sideways V shape.

Norman sucked his teeth for a moment, anger bubbling inside of him. Someone had laid in wait for his friend. Unacceptable. Then they had robbed the one thing that all magicals could claim as their own, no matter what. Their powers. Unforgivable.

Phil squeezed his eyes shut, tears spilling out the sides.

“Not where, Phil. When?” Norman raised his voice, trying not to shout, aware of the normies walking down the sidewalk.

“What? Just now! Back there!” Phil couldn’t separate the two questions, slapping the top of his balding head in confusion.

“The lightning,” growled Norman, his moustache twitching on either side and his eyes opening wider. “Stand up, Phil!” he barked, pulling Phil’s hands off his shoulders. “Can you get yourself to Zauberspiele? Tell Ernie, but only Ernie and tell him to meet me out back.
